Your child's first dental visit sets the tone for how they feel about dental care for years to come. Here's how to make it a positive experience.

When to go: The recommended age for a first dental visit is around 12 months — or within six months of the first tooth appearing. This early visit is mostly about getting your child comfortable with the dental environment.

What to expect: The first visit is usually short and gentle. We'll check for early signs of decay, assess jaw and tooth development, and give you guidance on brushing, diet, and habits like thumb-sucking.

How to prepare your child: Keep it positive. Avoid words like 'hurt', 'needle', or 'drill'. Instead, explain that the dentist will 'count your teeth' and 'make sure they're healthy'. Reading children's books about dental visits can help too.

What if your child is nervous? That's completely normal. Dr. Azka Zafar is experienced with anxious children and takes a gentle, patient approach. Sometimes the first visit is just about sitting in the chair and getting comfortable.

Regular check-ups from an early age help catch problems before they become painful or expensive to treat. We recommend visits every six months for children.
